Things to do in Funchal

The lively capital of Madeira is the perfect destination for an island getaway with a bit of character and culture. With its scenic mountain backdrop and lush vegetation, it’s a great place to unwind and enjoy the views or explore on foot. It also has plenty of historic buildings to see, offering an insight into the city’s past. Historic sites include Funchal Cathedral, with its glazed tiling, the Santa Clara Convent, dating back to the 15th century, and the Igreja do Monte 18th century church. Here you’ll also find the tomb of Charles I, last Emperor of Austria, and can take the steps to the roof for incredible views of Funchal.

Madeira is also home to a glorious collections of gardens and parks, such as the grounds at Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro, a British colonial house, and the Madeira Botanical Garden. Take a wander around the local markets, where you’ll find the freshest seafood and locally grown fruits, before taking a gentle stroll around the Old Town streets. One of our favourites is Rua Santa Maria, a top spot for shopping and dining.

If you’re looking for some souvenirs, you’ll find plenty of shops and malls in Funchal. The open-air Forum Madeira has over 80 shops, with a mix of high street brands and local boutiques. Finish off your day with an afternoon stroll around the harbour promenade. In the early evening you’ll find plenty of live music in the cafes and bars, while the nightlife really gets started at 2am when the clubs open.

Top attractions

One of the most popular things to do is to ride the cable car to the top of the Monte neighbourhood for views of the city, the mountains and the ocean. Once you’ve reached the top, you’ll be offer the chance to ride right back down again in a wicker toboggan ride. This unusual attraction has been running since the 1800s, and is a fun alternative to taking the cable car back down to the town.

While you’re still at the top, pay a visit to the Monte Palace and its Tropical Gardens. This botanic garden is one of the best in Funchal, where exotic plants flourish and waterfalls and Japanese pagodas can be found dotted around.

Best restaurants

There are plenty of restaurants and cafes catering for every taste in Funchal. For something a little more unusual, try Restaurante Mozart, where dishes are made from local and European cuisines and are named after classical composers. O Tasco is a great eatery for traditional Madeiran cuisine in a friendly and relaxed setting, while Il Gallo d’Oro is a Michelin-starred restaurant serving Mediterranean and Iberian dishes. Don’t miss the chance to try some Madeira wine in one of the city’s wine bars.
