Things to do in Faro Town when visiting

Faro is a city full of culture, history, and sights to see, often overlooked by holidaymakers heading straight to the beach resorts. Whether you’re staying in Faro or just visiting on a day trip, be sure to take in some of the fascinating churches such as the macabre bone chapel at Igreja do Carmo - The chapel is decorated with the bones and skulls of several hundred monks. Don’t miss a visit to the city’s ancient Se Cathedral too, with its amazing views over the city.

Other architectural treasures in Faro include the neoclassical Arco da Vila gate; the entrance to the walls guarding Faro’s old town. While the Palácio de Estoi offers gardens full of grottos, fountains, and beautiful tiles, ready to be explored.

If it’s beaches you’re after, Faro will spoil you for choice. Head straight to the Praia de Faro, where you’ll find wide-sweeping sands and a handful of bars, or take a boat trip to the Ilha Deserta, a sand island in the Rio Formosa National Park whose only residents are the local flamingoes.
