Getting some winter sun is a priority for many British travellers at this time of year, with the Canary Islands offering several options for a break in warmer climes.

Before booking their flights, accommodation and cheap airport transfers, holidaymakers will need to decide which island to visit. The four most popular destinations – Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura – all have plenty to offer.

A recent article in the Independent pointed out that Tenerife has arguably the widest range of attractions, with bustling resorts such as Playa de las Americas and Puerto de la Cruz among the most popular.

Tenerife is also a good location for golfers, with several high-quality courses dotted across the island.

April will see the Tenerife Golf Trophy return for the second year following a successful inaugural event in 2011.

According to the local tourism board, the series is designed to offer amateur players an introduction to three of Tenerife's courses: the Golf Costa Adeje, Golf Las Americas and Abama Golf.

Meanwhile, Fuerteventura is known for its beautiful beaches and is also the driest island in the Canaries. According to the newspaper, it receives an average rainfall of just 15 cm a year.

However, with an average winter temperature of 18 degrees C across the island group, holidaymakers are unlikely to have many worries about the weather when they touch down.

Other winter sun destinations highlighted by the Independent include Cyprus and Turkey, which both attract a large number of British holidaymakers each year.

People choosing Cyprus could book cheap airport transfers to reach popular coastal resorts such as Ayia Napa, Paphos and Limassol, while Turkey offers holiday hotspots like Marmaris, Kas and Akyaka.

While temperatures in these countries can be uncomfortably high in midsummer, the winter months offer visitors a more pleasant experience with an average of 20 degrees C.
