Why visit Reykjavik City Centre?

It may be one of the smallest capitals in the world, but Reykjavik is packed full of things to do. Known for its colourful buildings and, more recently, its vibrant art scene and infamous nightlife, it makes a great alternative city break destination. Its growing choice of excellent eateries and its proximity to stunning countryside and nature are other reasons to visit this city.

Things to do

Thanks to its smaller size, the best way to discover the capital is on foot or by bicycle (which you can easily rent). Take a wander around the main shopping streets, especially Laugavegur, where you can pick up everything from extreme outdoor wear to trendy Icelandic brands. Don’t forget to explore some of Iceland’s local delicacies at any of the many gastropubs, cafes and restaurants.

Laugavegur street is also one of the best places to experience Reykjavík’s nightlife, where bars stay open well into the night and there are plenty of pubs and clubs to try. If you want to see a little more of the country, there are various tours leaving the city centre that offer whale watching, puffin tours and horseback riding around the nearby national parks.

Attractions

The iconic Hallgrímskirkja church, which towers over the city and can be seen from almost anywhere in Reykjavik, is a popular sight to see and visitors can take in the stunning views from the platform at the top of its 74.5m tower. Swimming is also a popular thing to do for both locals and tourists with 17 public pools and hot baths on offer.

One of the most recognisable pieces of Icelandic art is the Sólfar steel boat sculpture, located by the sea, not far from the harbour. For an insight into the history of Iceland, pay a visit to the National Museum of Iceland, with interesting Viking artefacts, or the Árbær Open Air Museum. Of course, if you’re visiting during the winter months, one of the main attractions of the city is the possibility of seeing the incredible Northern Lights.

Eating out

There are lots of restaurants and cafes in Reykjavik, but some of the best include Guðjón Samúlesson, a fine dining restaurant without the hefty price tag which offers a good lunchtime menu. Snaps Bistro is highly rated, serving up French brasserie favourites such as mussels and onion soup. If you’ve hired a bike, stop off at the Bike Cave for a refreshing shower and a burger. Or grab some breakfast at Brauð & Co, an artisanal bakery in downtown Reykjavik.

March 31, 2023

At HolidayTaxis, we recognize that every traveler is different and may have their own preferences and requirements for their airport transfers. To accommodate this, we offer a diverse range of transfer vehicles for our customers to choose from, each with its own set of benefits and advantages.

For example, if you're traveling in a large group, our minibus or shared airport shuttle transfers might be the best option for you, as they can comfortably accommodate a larger number of passengers and their luggage. On the other hand, if you're traveling with just one or two companions, a private car may be more suitable for you as they offer a more intimate and personalised experience.
